Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)

Tree Protections brief guide.

Many trees in the UK are legally protected, typically by Tree Preservation Orders, Conservation Areas, Planning Conditions, Felling Licences and/or Restrictive Covenants. Anyone wishing to undertake work to a tree (for example a tree owner or tree contractor/arborist/tree surgeon) is advised to make suitable enquiries as to the legal status of the tree and any protection afforded to it in order to protect themselves and others from possible criminal prosecutions.

A tree preservation order (TPO) is an order made by the Council in respect of trees and woodlands to stop the:
Cutting down
Uprooting
Topping
Lopping
wilful damage, or
wilful destruction of protected trees or woodlands
Trees can be protected by a TPO or by being in a Conservation Area.
